Reading Readiness Classes
Effective Speech Therapy's reading readiness classes focus on phonemic awareness skills, alphabet recognition skills, and sight word recognition skills for preschoolers (age 3 years ) through second grade. The therapist directly teaches children how to break up words into words using a multisensory approach. Children will learn to recognize that sounds make up words and allow them to practice isolating, manipulating,blending and segmenting sounds.

The LIVE! Reading Readiness classes are held through the Zoom platform on Tuesday afternoons. The parent and student can log on with a tablet, phone, or computer to participate. They will see the therapist in real time and repeat the words and sounds and imitate the actions.

The two best predictors of early reading success are alphabet recognition and phonemic awareness (Adams, 1990)

Level 1 Introducing Reading Readiness Skills Fall Class. PreSchool. (3-5 year olds. ) Tuesdays 12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m.This 30 minute interactive group teletherapy class explicitly teaches the phonemic awareness skills to build foundational literacy skills. The focus is on hearing and manipulating sounds and syllables. Being able to listen to, recognize, and manipulate sounds is important when learning to read. Children will mimic sounds, words, sounds, and special hand movements. Letter names, letter sounds, and sight words are targeted each session. This is a multi-modal approach to phonemic awareness. Class size: Minimum 4 children- Maximum 8 children.
Level 2 Practicing Reading Readiness Fall Class. Entering Kindergarten. Tuesdays 12:45- 1:15 p.m. This 30 minute interactive group teletherapy class continues to explicitly teach and practice phonemic awareness skills to continue to build foundational literacy skills. Being able to listen to, recognize, and manipulate sounds is important when learning to read. We will expand phonemic awareness skills by introducing word part substitutions and increase language awareness skills including identifying the number of words in the sentence. Children will actively listen and then participate using their voice and special hand movements. Letter names, letter sounds, and sight words are targeted each session. This is a multi-modal approach to phonemic awareness. No previous experience necessary. Class size: Minimum 4 children- Maximum 8 children.

Level 3 Polishing those Phonemic Awareness Skills for Reading. Entering 1st grade or 2nd grade. Tuesdays 1:30 p.m.- 2:00 p.m. This 30 minute interactive group teletherapy class continues to practice phonemic awareness skills to further strengthen foundational literacy skills. Children will be challenged to determine if two words rhyme, separate initial and final sounds, blend and segment words, add and delete syllables of words, and ultimately form new words with syllable substitutions. Letter names and sounds are practiced for speed and accuracy each session. Different voice intonations will be practiced including changing your voice to indicate you are asking a question, making a statement, or have excitement. Class size: Minimum 4 children- Maximum 8 children.
